Keeping your Pets warm this Winter

With winter setting in and days and nights getting colder and shorter, I want to help ensure you have the information to keep your pet warm and safe this winter.

Stay safe during walks

If you have elderly or frequently groomed dogs, consider giving them a protective coat to keep them warm during walks.

To stay safe in low light conditions, wear reflective clothing. Additionally, consider using a flashing light for your dog to enhance visibility for both of you.

To prevent any accidents, make sure to keep your dogs away from frozen water as the thickness of the ice may not be reliable and could break under their weight. When walking them in snowy or icy weather, remember to wash their paws when you return home to avoid them licking rock salt or grit, which can be harmful to our pets.

Keeping Cats warm

Ensure your cat's bedding is positioned away from chilly draughts and remains cozy and dry. During the winter months, it's crucial that your cat can find a warm spot, like your house or another heated indoor space.

It is important to note that antifreeze and rock salt can be toxic to our cats too.

Before driving off, be sure to check under your car as it can be a comfortable resting place for cats.

Rabbits and guinea pigs

During the winter months, it is essential to provide outdoor pets like rabbits and guinea pigs with additional bedding, such as dust-free hay. To shield their living space from the weather, use blankets or covers to insulate their hutches while ensuring proper ventilation.

To keep your pets dry during rainy weather, ensure that the indoor area of their enclosure has a slanted roof to facilitate water drainage. Elevate it at least four inches above the ground and position it in a sheltered location, oriented away from wind and rain.

If the temperature decreases, consider relocating their enclosure to an outhouse shed or unused garage. Should you opt to bring your rabbits or guinea pigs inside, ensure they have ample time and space to exercise in a secure and safe setting.
